Kick-off meeting of the Jean Monnet project TeMiSED

On August 25, 2026, the kick-off meeting for the new Erasmus+ project, Jean Monnet Module “Teaching Migration and Security: European Dimension,” was held at the Faculty of International Relations of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. The project addresses the teaching and research dimensions of migration and security, EU policies in these areas, and fostering academic dialogue between the EU and Ukraine.

Ivan Franko National University of Lviv is launching a new Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Module project: ‘Teaching Migration and Security: European Dimension’ (TeMiSED) / ‘Teaching Migration and Security: The European Dimension’, project 101238971 – TeMiSED – ERASMUS-JMO-2025-HEI-TCH-RSCH. The project will be implemented at the Faculty of International Relations of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv in collaboration with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence “Western Ukrainian Research Centre for European Studies” (WURCES – Western Ukrainian Research Centre for European Studies) over a three-year period – from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2029.

To mark the launch of the project, an inaugural meeting was held at the Faculty of International Relations, during which the main objectives, tasks and areas of work of the Jean Monnet Module were presented, and organisational issues relating to its implementation were discussed.

The Dean of the Faculty of International Relations, Doctor of Economics, Professor, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Markiyan Zinoviyovych Malskyy, who congratulated the project team on securing the grant and emphasised the importance of developing the European dimension of the Faculty’s educational programmes, deepening research in the field of migration and security, and expanding international academic cooperation.

Marianna Leonidovna Gladysh, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Ukraine in Finland and Associate Professor at the Department of International Security and Strategic Studies, Faculty of International Relations—who is the initiator of the project—joined the inaugural meeting remotely, as well as the English-taught dual-degree Master’s programme in ‘International Security and Human Rights’, which Lviv University runs jointly with the University of Tuscia (Viterbo, Italy).

The project coordinator, Oksana Anatoliivna Krayevska, PhD in Political Science, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of European and Regional Studies at the Faculty of International Relations, outlined in her presentation the conceptual foundations, the main objectives and implementation plan for the project, as well as the prospects for integrating migration and security issues into the faculty’s teaching and research activities. During the meeting, it was emphasised that the issues of migration and security are becoming particularly relevant in the current European and international context. Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, large-scale population displacement, the transformation of European migration policy, issues of human rights protection, integration, border security and the interconnection between migration processes and security challenges require in-depth academic analysis and modern approaches to teaching.

The Jean Monnet TeMiSED module aims to strengthen the European dimension of teaching and research on migration and security issues, develop students’ competences, foster a critical understanding of European Union policies and practices in these areas, and stimulate academic dialogue between Ukraine and the EU.

Within the project, particular attention will be paid to combining educational, research and international components, engaging Ukrainian and European experts, developing an interdisciplinary approach and disseminating the project’s results amongst the academic community. The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence ‘Western Ukrainian Research Centre for European Studies’ (WURCES) at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv will play a key role in implementing these objectives, whose involvement will help to strengthen the project’s expert and research components, develop interdisciplinary research into migration and security processes, and broaden academic dialogue with European partners.

The implementation of the Jean Monnet Module TeMiSED will mark an important step in the further development of European studies at Lviv University and will help deepen understanding of contemporary migration and security processes, European policies, and the prospects for Ukraine’s further integration into the European Union.
