EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE THIRD MISSION OF HEIS FOR UKRAINE

On December 10, 2024, within the Erasmus+ Structural Capacity Building project 101083077-UNICOM-ERASMUS-EDU-2022-CBHE “Universities-Communities: Strengthening Cooperation (UNICOM)”. An online workshop dedicated to European practices of implementing the third mission of universities was held. The event was held in cooperation with the Ukrainian European Studies Association and the Institute of Higher Education of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine. It hosted 34 attendees from different parts of Ukraine (Kyiv, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Lutsk, and other cities).
The online workshop presented the practices of implementing the third mission at the University of Genoa (Italy), the Czech University of Applied Sciences (Czech Republic), the University of Latvia (Latvia), the University of Applied Sciences for SMEs (Germany), and the Lund University (Sweden).
Oksana Kraesvska, UNCOM Project Coordinator at Lviv University, welcomed the event participants. The IFNUL team consisting of Svitlana Sas (PhD in Economics, Head of the Planning and Financial Department of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv) and Iryna Ivanochko (PhD in Economics, Head of the Center for Quality Assurance) presented the experience of the University of Genoa. Yaryna Tanchak (PhD in Economics, Head of the Center for Veterans Support and Social Initiatives) and Iryna Snovydovych (PhD in Economics, Head of the Center for Career Development and Cooperation with Business) presented their experience at the Czech University of Applied Sciences. Marianna Gladysh (PhD in Political Science, Associate Professor, Associate Professor of the Department of International Security and Strategic Studies, Head of the Nordic Center) described the practice of the University of Applied Sciences for SMEs in Bielefeld.
During the event, conceptual approaches to the third mission of higher education institutions, in general, in the European partner countries of the UNICOM project and the possibility of applying this experience in Ukraine were discussed. As a general summary of the discussion, it can be noted that the effectiveness of the implementation of the third mission of universities depends on the scientific component and quality of research conducted by the university, as well as its ability to implement the results of scientific research in the public space through social innovations and entrepreneurial initiatives.
